Grangetown Kitchen Garden Volunteer
Our Poet Tree canvas was created with repurposed materials, mainly lentils, beans and pulses and twine from our botanical dyeing workshops earlier in the year. The four seasons depicted around the corners of the canvas are left-over materials from the other workshops and art works you can see around you in the Space to Grow exhibition.
Collaborating with spoken word poet Duke Al Durham, our objective was to engage and inspire the dedicated volunteers of Grangetown Kitchen Garden through a unique method of assessing and reflecting on their accomplishments.
Initiated in April 2023, Grangetown Kitchen Garden serves as a vibrant community hub, hosting a weekly surplus and sourced food market, a food surplus cafe, and an urban farm. The farm not only supplies the market but also contributes to the delicious dishes served at the cafe, reflecting the commitment to a circular approach and sustainability. The philosophy of Grangetown Kitchen Garden revolves around eradicating the stigma associated with food banks and advocating a zero-food waste ethos, fostering a community united by a shared dedication to the planet.
The Grangetown Kitchen Garden experience has become a highlight for customers, offering a welcoming space for community members to gather and socialise in a lively atmosphere.
Continuing the volunteer’s commitment to convey the identity of Grangetown Kitchen Garden, our initiative sought to encapsulate the spirit of the market, café, and farm in a collaborative artwork. Titled The Poet Tree, this mixed media canvas intricately portrays the interconnectivity of Grangetown Kitchen Garden and its community. The process not only yielded crucial insights and feedback of the project but also gave rise to a compelling new piece of artwork for the community centre.
The Poet Tree installation serves as a visual narrative, vividly depicting the significant journey undertaken by the Grangetown Kitchen Garden team and acting as a testament to their impactful endeavours in addressing the challenges posed by the cost-of-living crisis within the community. This installation enhances awareness and appreciation for their valuable contributions.
The poem and canvas beautifully highlights the sincere dedication and communal spirit that resonates throughout every aspect of Grangetown Kitchen Garden.
